The Health Department of the Full Gospel Mission in Cameroon was birthed in Bakang in the South-West Region between 1969 and1970. The first Missionaries had the vision of accompanying the work of evangelization with medical support. Later in November 1978, the Bantem / Bamenbou health center would be opened. This center would later become the current Full Gospel Health Center in Mamfé. Then followed the Jesus Saves and Heals Health Center in Garoua. The history of Bethesda Hospital, the flagship of the Mission’s medical works, highlights the initial vision and its development as a testimony and a reference for the future; proof that God still speaks today. In 1991, during a time of prayer in the courtyard of the Church located in the Tsinga neighborhood in Yaoundé, God spoke to the German Missionary Peter Schneider, sent to Cameroon by the ECCLESIA Churches of Germany.

The message was as follows: “You will have land in this valley here for the construction of a hospital where people will experience my love”. Pastor Peter Schneider replied: “Lord, I am not a doctor. Please call someone else for this job.” But God continued to speak to him in the same way for a whole week. Later, Pastor Peter Schneider received a message from a German contractor, Reinhard Braun, who had followed his preaching during a visit to Germany. He was convinced to support Peter in his missionary work in Cameroon, notably in the construction of a hospital. With this confirmation, Pastor Peter Schneider , also an architect by profession, designed the plan for the Hospital to be built on the site indicated by God in the valley. The City authorities and some ministers of the Cameroonian Government vehemently rejected this idea, the valley having been declared “a  swampy area”, unsuitable for construction.

Pastor Peter SCHNEIDER assured them that they would certainly see God’s Word fulfilled. We saw in many ways how God confirmed what He had promised.
“After 5 years of construction in this swampy area, the first section of the Hospital was built!”In 1999, after many struggles, the Hospital was inaugurated in the presence of many of the country’s authorities by the then General Superintendent of the Full Gospel Mission, the Reverend Dr NJAYO David NJEMO. As Pastor Peter SCHNEIDER told the authorities how God had promised that the FGM would have this plot of land for a Hospital, he also obtained the wonderful name of “BETHESDA” (House of Mercy), indicating that in this place the sick and suffering should experience God’s love and power. Our God is truly faithful. Praise his name!
